She created Like a Boy to make men face how they act and to show women that they shouldn’t fall for men’s games. Her song, “Like a Boy” was influenced by her ex-boyfriend, Bow Wow, who wined and dined her, but then would cheat on her. Ciara has said that watching Destiny’s Child was a big part of the reason why she became a hip-hop artist. Ciara says that she was heavily influenced by Destiny’s Child, a group of self-empowering women that took the music industry by storm during a time when it wasn’t easy to make it as an all female group. This is significant because we know that, at an early age, she was forced to surrender to a man’s needs. In 2007, when the video was released, not a lot of women were speaking up for themselves so Ciara used her voice for them.Ĭiara’s background of being a military child forced Ciara’s mother and herself from place to place. I love this music video and have been obsessed with it since I was in the sixth grade. She’s helping to show that gender roles expect them to be polar opposites, like black and white. This furthers our understanding of the contrast of behavior in men and women in relationships. While she does this, she is wearing a white dress. Ciara also dances on and off with her male alter ego, who is smooth and dark. They do this because Ciara is comparing women in relationships to things that are easily played with, that get taken advantage of and that aren’t shown respect, like toys. The dancers, at one point, act like little programmed toys. Most of the female dancers in this video are dressed in masculine attire and dance with a lot of power, to demonstrate who holds the power in the relationships Ciara is describing. This music video is all about traditional gender roles and how they still are applied to a lot of modern relationships, unfairly. She wears baggy pants, a white muscle tank, chains around her neck and tattoos. She then looks into the camera and says, “Ladies, it’s time to switch roles”. At the beginning of the video, Ciara appears sitting in a throne-like chair in boyish attire. The performers and dancers in Ciara’s “Like a Boy” music video all demonstrate prioritization of the men versus women binary.
